Explanation Of Homemade Shaker

Instrument:Shaker

Materials Needed: Can with lid, rocks, water(optional),

Instructions for Homemade Instrument:
  1. Put around 5 rocks in the can.
  2. Fill the can with water up till it’s ¾ full (not a necessary step)
  3. Seal the lid on tightly.
  4. Start shaking!

I’m going to explain how the sound comes from the shaker. Because it’s simple to create, it’s pretty simple to explain.

The rocks bounce around in the can when you shake it, and it hits the inside of the can. The vibrations from the impact travels from the can to your ears.

When water is applied, the rocks’ impact isn’t as quick and hard. The water slows it down so the sound is softer. Also when you shake it, you hear the water hitting parts inside the can too.

If you left the can no sound would come out because you’re not giving any motion to move the rocks and water. Even if you rolled it, you’d still get sound because the rocks and water are rolling around.


Now you can see how the shaker is made and how it works. It works because the rocks bounce around in the can when you shake it, and it hits the inside of the can. That’s also why it’s called a shaker!

Science roadshow

The science roadshow was amazing. Our class went on Friday with Class 5. There were many experiments, one which I was involved in. I found it great. My favourite one was the final experiment.

They got out a balloon full of hydrogen. They then lit a candle which was placed on a metal pole. But before they set it alight, they warned us to cover our ears. We all did so. They lit the tube connected to the balloon.

KA-BAM! The balloon blew up with a small explosion. Everyone was amazed. We started cheering. Then one of the scientists spoke up. “That was just a practice for the big one! Cover your ears once more and brace yourself!” She shouted.

They pulled out a 100% oxygen balloon. They set the tube alight. I was thinking of not covering my ears. The last bang wasn’t too big. “On the other hand,” I thought. I quickly covered my ears.

Good thing I did. KA-BLAMMO!! The explosion covered the bursting balloon while letting a shockwave out. It knocked people over. My ears were ringing. “W-wow...” I stuttered. The balloon was in smithereens. My ribs tingled.

Unfortunatly that was the last act for us. We had to go. I look forward to any other science roadshows!

The Guitar

The guitar is a common instrument. It can make many different sounds, and can play your favourite songs. But how exactly does it work?

A guitar has many parts. There is the main part, the body. The body on guitars give them their tone. Guitars also have necks, frets, bridges and of course, the strings.

The guitar makes sound waves when you strum the strings. The sound gets clearer and louder inside the guitar. The sound also depends on the tuning of the guitar.

A simple way to learn the guitar: You strum with one hand on the part of the strings which are above the hole. With the other hand, you make different chords. Here is a picture to help.

Sound funnel experiment

Science experiment:

Question: What will happen to the sound if I change the shape of a piece of paper? (e.g. from a flat shape to a funnel shape)

Hypothesis: (What do you think will happen?) e.g. I think that….
The sound will get blurrier every time the hole narrows.

Materials needed:

Paper, Tissue, Tape

Experiment (procedure):

e.g. Step 1 - Hold a flat piece of paper by your ear. Cover your opposite ear with your hand. Get your friend to speak to you. What’s the sound like?

Step 2 - Roll the piece of paper into a funnel shape. Once again, put the funnel against your ear. Face the funnel towards your partner and listen to them speak. What does it sound like?

Step 3 - Face the funnel to the side while your partner speaks to you. Did it make a difference to the sound that you can hear?

Step 4 - Put some cotton balls or tissue paper into the funnel at one end. Is there a difference?

Observations:    When the paper was flat, it was normal.  When it was a funnel facing forwards, it sounded a wee bit clearer than before. When it was still the funnel facing forwards, it sounded a bit blurrier.

With the cotton inserted, the sound returned to normal. No difference. When the paper was rolled up facing the front, it sounded much clearer. And when it was facing the side, the sound was projected and it sounded echoey.

Conclusion:
In the end our hypothesis was wrong. The sound remained normal. Most of the time there wasn’t much difference.

Music and Sound

Music is something which can affect your emotions and your brain. Sometimes, music can make someone happy, and it can calm someone down, even make them cry!

There are many types of genres, here are a few. There is Reggae, Opera, Pop, Hip hop, Rap, Jazz, 70’s, 80’s, just to name a few.

There are also different types of instruments, as you should know by now. To name some, there is the triangle, piano, violin, piccolo, flute, drum, and guitar.

They all have different effects on your brain. Music that you heard a while ago may bring back old memories! This is because of your hippocampus. The hippocampus affects your long term memory. When it’s nice, calm and relaxing, you may feel like sleeping. If music is too loud, you may want to turn it down a lot.

When music reaches a level that’s too high, it can erase some of your hearing! It happens by the ear drum vibrating really hard and these tiny hair like things (in your ear) start to lay down instead of standing up straight. Sound is not transmitted as loudly as before.

Once these hair like things are damaged, and do not ever return to their upright position, your hearing is damaged permanently. So be careful! Too high a sound and you won’t ever have to worry about turning the music down!

When you’re listening to music on a speaker, the sound forms a wave, colliding with the other air molecules which travels through your ear. Next, the sound impacts with the eardrum, that vibrates. The vibrations go to your cochlea. The cochlea then turns the vibrations into nerve signals that go to the brain. Your brain then translates it. So that’s how you hear.

So take real good care of your ears! Be sure to turn down that loud music, and I hope you learnt something new!

Straw Oboe Science Experiment

Science experiment:

Question: What will happen to the sound if I cut the straw shorter and blow through it?

Hypothesis: (What do you think will happen?) e.g. I think that the sound will go higher
Materials needed:
Straw, scissors
Experiment (procedure):
Step 1: Crease the straw 2-3 cm on one end
Step 2 - Cut the creased end of the straw into a triangle shape about 1.5cm long.
Step 3 - Put the triangle shape into your mouth and blow
Step 4 - Cut the end shorter and shorter
Step 5 - Listen to the sound it makes

Data (What happened?)

Even higher than before. Very high pitched.

Observations:
The data shows that the sound got higher and higher as it got cut. It turns out that my hypothesis was correct. When the straw was at it’s longest, it made a low sound. At 10 cm, it was higher, but still low. But at 5 cm, it was very high pitched. It was harder to blow than at 10 and 15 cm.

Conclusion:
My conclusion is that when you cut the straw shorter and shorter, the pitch goes higher and higher.

A World Without Sound

Imagine a world without sound. One of the worse things that  could happen. No matter what, people could not hear anything. Not even themselves.

We love hearing sound, like music and humming, but with that gone we would be disappointed. There are some sounds we probably won’t mind missing, like insults. We could ignore them and carry on. Wait, we wouldn’t even have to bother!

A world without sound would be a very dangerous one. For example, if a train was arriving at the station, and you’re walking over the crossing. You definitely wouldn’t hear it, and probably die.

To add onto the chaos, if you’re listening to the radio while driving, you won’t hear the notices. And who knows? Maybe they sent out a warning about a bridge that blew up, and you’re heading straight to that bridge?

So, we probably could get along with sign language, typing and writing all the time. It makes a big difference listening to nothing. It’s better hearing everything, even if some of the sounds aren’t nice.

Immersion Assembly Term 2

Term 2 had started. I was excited. After my class did the roll, we headed over to the hall. The hall had multi-coloured balloons hanging around the isle and stage. “This’ll be interesting.” I thought.


Soon, the other classes filled up the empty spaces. Mr Burt came out and shouted, “Welcome to Term 2!” He told us what the main inquiry was. It was about motion and that sort of things.


To start everything off, he and the prefects started tying balloons to a small car. Once they tied 15 balloons onto the little plush toy, it flew.


Team 1 came up. They had a video about the zoo and the safety equipment. Then, Mrs George came up. She told us that tomorrow the students in Team one only were going to the zoo. The seniors started groaning.


By the time we stopped, Team 2 came up. They gave us a small tutorial about flight, thrust, drag and gravity. They then picked up paperplanes and plastic planes, and threw them at us. Unfortunatly, none of the planes made it to where the year 7’s and 8’s were.


Team 3 was up. They danced around on the stage with multi-coloured dresses. Then, once they were done, they told us about light and how it works. Mrs Barks also told us of how we see colours.


They then walked off the stage, dancing. “Nice.” I thought, smirking. “And now,” shouted Mr Burt suspensively, “Team 4!” Team 4 first played a movie about buoyancy and displacement.


Then, they gave us a quick quiz. If we got it right, we’d get a chocolate fish. I found the questions very easy.


But unfortunately for me, I never got chosen. While I cried on the inside, Team 5 approached the stage for their item. They had an MTV about sound and physics. It was funny, and entertaining simultaneously.

Soon after that, assembly ended. As my class walked back to class, I smiled. I think we’re all in for something special!

The Death Cases Pt 2: Jazzy!

“Hey, look!” shouted Emma. “There’s another case! It says that there is human life on this remote island!” “And?” replied Michael. “We’re going there!” answered Emma. “Oh, joy.” said Michael.


The Death Cases


Case 2: Jazz Island


Michael and Emma sailed to Jazz island. It was pretty big. “There better not be any tornados.” grumbled Michael. “Oh, come on, what could possibly go wrong?” said Emma.


SMAKY! Michael and Emma both face planted into the Jazz island soil. “How did the ship blow up?” asked Emma. “You jinxed us.” replied Michael.


Michael and Emma walked, until they found a house. One wall was on the ground, underneath a U.F.O. “What the,” said Michael, “This house is worse than what I’ve seen on TV!”


Emma was already investigating the scene. There was a hand sticking out. It was square. “Heeyy,” shouted Michael, “It’s Steve! From Minecraft!” Emma rolled her eyes, and carried on investigating. The hand suddenly got zapped, and sucked into Michael’s I5 (I skull 5). He was on Minecraft.


“HALT!! WHO GOES THERE!!??” shouted a voice. There was a cop approaching them. “MICHAEL JONES!!” shouted Michael, grasping his sheriff badge. Emma stared at Michael, and folded her arms as tight as she could. “Oh yeah, and Jane. I...I mean Emma Jane.”


The man stared for a while, then spoke again. “Name’s Miko. Natural habitat’s security guard.” “Sssssssoooooooo, Miko,” scoffed Emma, “care to help us with this case?” “Sorry,” Miko replied. “I’m still investigating this giant zombie on the other side of the hill.”


WHAT?!” shouted Michael.  “Can’t be serious.” “Serious.” sarcastically replied Miko. There was an orangy-green light which zapped the zombie, and pulled it into the phone.


“Nice going, Sherlock Jones.” Miko angrily teased. “Hah! Sherlock Jones! The defective detective!” also teased Emma. “RRRRRGGGGG.....” grumbled Michael.


DRRIING!! Miko’s phone rung. It rung very loud. His ringtone was nyan cat on full volume. Rainbows flew out and pushed up Miko’s head. Michael and Emma flew away a few meters. NYANYANYANYA... the phone rang.



Miko was just able to answer the phone. “WHERE WERE YOU!?” shouted a voice from the phone. “Look, Nitro,” said Miko, “It disappeared. I know that Mike will fire us, but who cares.” He hung up.


“Aha!” yelled Emma. “I found the murderer. He was killed by the zombie.” “And the zombie was killed by....” questioned Michael. “I found some tools used to kill it. The tools were made by a man named Lee. And that body was inside the house.” Emma answered.


“So a double kill?” asked Miko. “Yep.” replied Emma. “LIES!! ALL LIES!!” shouted a voice. Emma and Miko turned around. “Nitro.” mumbled Miko. “Is he explosive?” asked Michael. “No...” replied Miko. Nitro had one strand of hair sticking up. The rest was bald. He was really musclely. You couldn’t look at one part of him without seeing a muscle.


cartoonlover98Emma was most delighted. “Hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba” she said repeatedly for most of the evening. Michael, Nitro and Miko started talking with ‘hubba hubba hubba’ in the background.


“It was this boy named Iisa who killed that giant zombie. Very recently, too.” told Nitro. “That man was Herobrine. He broke most of bones by a wall falling on him. Then his neck was cut by that leg of that U.F.O.”


“Ya know,” said Michael, “I never noticed that.” “Me neither.” added Miko. “M-me t-too.” bubbled Emma. “I’d like to be in there with N-Nitro.” “Crushes, aye?” teased Michael. Nitro was scared. He was hysterical. “AARRGGG!!!! NO!!” Nitro shouted, punching Emma in mid-air. He was going slow motion.


“How do they do this?” asked Miko. “Maybe this is a movie?” replied Michael. “No murderer.” said Miko. “No-one to arrest.” A week later, Emma had healed, and Miko and Nitro joined the two.


One day, Emma and Nitro were very happy. Miko and Michael walked in. “They getting married or something?” asked Miko.


“Hey, look!” shouted Emma. “There’s another case! It says that there is a murdered person in the cement mixer!” “And?” replied Miko. “We’re going there!” answered Nitro. “Oh, joy.” said Michael.


So they went there. There was the man in the cement. SHOVE! Someone pushed Nitro into the cement. He was stuck. “HALP!” he cried. The cement mixer drove towards Emma. Michael jumped in front. Both of them were hit.


Miko went to attack from behind. The mixer drove backwards, and Miko was stuck spinning in wet cement.


IN THE NEXT CASE....

Miko and Nitro try to get out of their sticky situation, while Michael and Emma try to regain consciousness. Another person joins them, but is he friend or foe?
